One of the most poignant and colourful sights of 2014 has
to be the major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at
the Tower of London. Marking one hundred years since the first full day of
Britain's involvement in the First World War, 888,246 ceramic poppies have
progressively filled the Tower's famous moat over the summer. Created by
ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, each
poppy represents a British military fatality during the war.
The poppies encircled the iconic landmark, creating a
spectacular display visible from all around the Tower and a location for
personal reflection. The ceramic poppy installation creates a powerful visual
commemoration.
This weekend volunteers began removing the hand-made ceramic
poppies and the sale of the ceramic poppies will aid six service charities in
the UK.
